The beginning of the past year was quite optimistic, as the market continued its growth in January and February, but in March the decrease started. As a result on 1 July 2013 the government started a new preferential car lending program. However, despite its popularity, it enabled only to prevent the market from worse decline and it was decided to terminate the program in December. The news promoted sales boom and the market grew during the last month of 2013. However the annual sales decreased by 5.5% to 2.61 million vehicles.
LADA is still the market leader with 446,200 vehicles sold during the period under review (-16.9%). The second place and the leadership among foreign brands in Russia belongs to French Renault, which sold 207,800 cars (+10.5%) last year. Then come two Korean brands with positive sales dynamics: KIA (+5.7% up to 198,000 vehicles) and Hyundai (+4.6% up to 180,000 vehicles). The fifth place was taken by Chevrolet (174,600 vehicles; - 14.8%) which used to be the best selling foreign brand for several years.
During 12 months of 2013 companies imported almost 792,000 passenger cars to our country. On average 66,000 cars were imported to Russia every month. The share of new vehicles is still not less than 98% of the total import. The traditional leaders are three Japanese brands (Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi), which generate about 35% of the total import together.
According to AUTOSTAT estimation, last year the average price of a passenger car in the Russian market came up to $28,300. As a result the total proceeds were $35.3 billion during the year.
