Chevrolet Сorvette Stingray gets a mid-engine design

Chevrolet unveiled the Corvette Stingray2020. According to the press service of the manufacturer, engine location of the vehicles has changed; instead of the previous front-engine, it got a mid-engine configuration. Thus, this is the first serial mid-engine Corvette in the history of the brand.

According to GM President Mark Reuss, the traditional front-engine vehicle has reached its performance limits, necessitating the new layout. “It still looks and feels like a real Corvette in terms of comfort and driving experience, but it is better controlled than any Corvette in the entire history of the brand,” he said.

It was also mentioned that with the change of the configuration, the Stingray 2020 got advantages such as improved weight distribution with a balance toward the rear axle; faster acceleration (100 km/h for 3 seconds when equipped with the Z51 package); better road visibility (due to the lower location of the bonnet, dashboard and steering wheel); a more usable salon with a total volume of about 357 liters (due to two luggage trunks).

Other improvements include the improved steering gear ratio (15.7 vs. 16.25) and the front suspension lift function that can raise the front bumper by 40-mm in 2.8 seconds. This allows more clearance for abrupt road transitions, potholes, steep driveways, etc. This function is active under less than 38.5 km/h driving conditions.

The Stingray 2020 is equipped with a new generation Chevrolet 6.2L Small Block V-8 LT2 engine, located behind the driver. This is the only atmospheric V-shaped 8-cylinder engine in the segment. The new engine outputs 495 horsepower (369 kW) and 637 Nm of torque.

Production of the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will start at GM Bowling Green plant at the end of 2019. The sales of the model in the Russian market have not yet been planned.
