Engine oils: does the import retreat?

According to the estimation of specialists of the AUTOSTAT agency, the volume of imports of engine oils for cars and LCV decreased by approximately 2.3% in 2017. On the one hand, such a drop looks insignificant, on the other hand - the car parc grew for the last year, and therefore the capacity of the engine oil market had to increase. For example, according to our experts' estimates, the segment of oils for cars in 2017 grew by no less than 1.5%, and the segment of oils for LCV - by 3.3%, and against the background of these figures, the decrease in imports looks more noticeable.

However, with even deeper consideration, it becomes obvious that in the structure of the Russian market of engine oils in recent years there have been a number of changes that must also be taken into account when speaking of the dynamics of falling or growth. So, for example, we can not ignore the fact that, it is not required to import today some amount of imported oils, which were imported into our country from abroad, as they began to be produced on the territory of Russia. So, in 2012, SHELL opened its Russian plant, FUCHS in 2013, and at present, according to our estimates, about 25-30 thousand tons of Shell Helix oils of Russian origin can enter the market.

Experts noted that changes have affected the composition of suppliers of imported engine oils: there has been some redistribution within the producers, depending on the type of engine oils. It allowed the manufacturers of the so-called "second echelon" in terms of product volumes to approach the TOP of the famous leaders of the first echelon.
