The head of Ferrari resigns

CEO of Fiat Chrysler, Sergio Marchionne, will replace Luca di Montezemolo, with whom he had a conflict because of the development strategy of the sports car manufacturer and the mediocre results of the factory team of Formula 1.

According to the newspaper "Vedomosti", Luca di Montezemolo leaves Ferrari office on October 13th and he will be replaced by the Fiat Chrysler CEO, Sergio Marchionne. The leave of Mr. Montezemolo, who is now 67 years old, was expected after the development of the conflict between the two leaders about the vision of the strategy and the role of Ferrari in the group Fiat, which owns 90% of the sports car manufacturer.

Ferrari is a key part of plans of Mr.Markionne to increase sales of group of luxury cars and increase competitiveness with Volkswagen, which owns Lamborghini. Mr. Montezemolo wanted to preserve the autonomous status of the brand and to limit the sale by about 7,000 cars a year to maintain the exclusivity of the brand. This is at odds with the objectives of Mr.Markionne to use Ferrari for the shift of Fiat to the segment of high class cars as part of the merger with Chrysler Group.

Date of resignation of Mr. Montezemolo - October 13 - coincides with the day when Fiat plans to list Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) in New York City after the completion of the merger of Fiat with the American company.

Mr.Markionne also was unhappy with the results of Ferrari racing Formula 1. There is no irreplaceable, said Mr.Markionne, responding to journalists' questions during the Italian Grand Prix in Monza about the failure of Mr. Montezemolo to lead Ferrari to the championship in Formula 1 for six years. CEO of Fiat said that the disappointing results of the racing team Ferrari are “unacceptable" and that "absolutely non-negotiable" that Ferrari should win "the royal race”.

Earlier it was announced that Mr. Montezemolo, the head of Ferrari during 23 years, will remain in office for another three years. Under the direction of Mr. Montezemolo Ferrari retained positions in the top lines of the teams of Formula 1, has increased revenues 10 times and 3 times - sales, by making the family business of the Italian company in one of the most powerful brands.
