St. Petersburg car market remained at the last year's level in the first quarter

According to the agency “Auto-Dealer- SPb”, it was sold 45,205 new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, which corresponds to the level of last year's sales in St. Petersburg in the first quarter of 2014. In March, St. Petersburg car market also showed zero dynamics - it was sold 18,968 new cars in the city.

Leader in the first quarter was Renault. At the same time the most popular brand of March was Volkswagen, which has bet KIA only slightly. Both brands, thanks to the March sales, managed to straighten a negative trend, which was for the first two months. Also domestic Lada can be proud of sales in March, which managed to climb up by two lines for one month.

“The main factor, which is determining the development of the market, was the increase in foreign exchange rates”, - says the CEO of “Auto-Dealer- SPb”, Mikhail Chaplygin. – “Consumer invested the depreciating ruble in cars, both in premium brands or crossovers, and in some low- cost variants, for example, that affected the Lada growth in March”.

The share of St. Petersburg in total sales of new cars in Russia rose: it was 7.5 % in the first quarter of this year, whereas it was 7.3% in the first three months of 2013.

“The second quarter could be completed with the minus for St. Petersburg car market”, - forecasts Mikhail Chaplygin. – “It is possible that consumers will postpone the purchase of a new car to the second half, if the Russian government will decide to resume the program of preferential car loans from July, as it was started to talk again recently”.
