Dynamics of prices for cars in Russia

Automobilization in Russia will reach the level of developed countries by 2025

By 2025 Russia must become equal by provision of cars of population with the present indicators of such developed countries as Japan, France and Great Britain. This prospect was announced by the manager of analytic department of PricewaterhouseCoopers in Russia, Leonid Kostroma, in the conference for specialists of marketing and analysts “Car market of Russia. Results and prospects” that was held in Moscow.

By the present time Russia is approximately on the same level as Brazil by the level automobilization of population but it outstripped China and India and also some countries of Eastern Europe, such as Slovakia and Ukraine. By the words of Mr. Kostroma, there will be 400 cars per 1000 citizens by 2025 and the level of per capita income, with which the market saturation would be reached, will be 25 thousand dollars. Therewith, the annually share of scrappage cars will increase from 4% in 2011 to 6% in 2025.

At the same time car parc of developed countries will grow lower considerably because of high automobilization of population and car market saturation, remarked Mr. Kostroma. Moreover, there is an opposite process in countries of Europe, in Japan and in USA at the present time – “deautomobilization”. In other words, the level of provision of population by cars in developed countries decreases, in particular, because of owing costs and service of cars increasing (including the price for petrol increasing, insurance costs and paid parking places increasing). “Besides, the growth of population of big cities influences on this process, where it is offered the developed transport infrastructure, which is cheaper and comparable by transport quality with the private car”, - said Mr. Kostroma.

The results of research of consumer preferences of young population of USA and Europe confirmed the hypothesis about the interest decreasing of young people in cars. So, the share of American consumers that suppose that car is to be bought, decreased from 93% in 1996 to 86% in 2010. “These tendencies are not typical for Russia but we could not exclude that we will observe the similar changes in big cities in some time”, - remarked the expert.
