MAN will set up the manufacture of trucks in St. Petersburg in a year

German producer of trucks and buses MAN and the government of St. Petersburg signed a memorandum about the trucks production creation on April 14th. The investments in the assembly of vehicles will be 25 million Euros. Germans are not going to build the plant in the green field, the assembly will be made in the former site of GM in the Arsenal plant. The production preparation will take about one year and it is planned to start the production of heavy trucks in the spring of 2012, wrote RBK daily. MAN is going to produce trucks in Russia for Russian, Byelorussian and Kazakhstan markets. Mr. Pachta-Rainchover remarked by discussing the perspectives that it is planned to produce a quarter of sold MAN vehicles in Russia in 2012 and the enterprise plans to reach the full capacity of 6 thousand trucks in 2013.
There will be produced the assembly of chassis and painting in the first stage in Russia. But it is planned to increase the localization in future. The depth of production will depend on the suppliers of components that we will find here, - remarked Mr. Pachta-Rainchover. He hopes that all huge details will be produced in Russia soon. For example, the agreement with KAMAZ about engines production was already concluded. The plant will produce the most powerful trucks, which are in the highest demand in the market in the first stage and then it will produce not big trucks and trailers. The pricing policy in the market was not defined yet but, according to the words of Mr. Pachta-Rainchover, as the configuration could be in the shorten variant, then the price could be also lower than the price for vehicles produced in Europe. The experts suppose that MAN is overcautious, by estimating modesty its possibilities in the Russian market, as the manufacture inside the country is one of ways to win competitors. By the words of markets participants, the Russian transport companies had big losses during the crisis and they didnt buy new vehicles for the park, so MAN has come to Russia in time. It should be also reminded that the production Scania already works in St. Petersburg, which could provide the annual assembly of 6,5 thousand trucks. In 2009 Volvo set up the assembly plant of trucks in Kaluga.
According to the data of AEB, MAN increased the sales of heavy trucks (more than 16 tonnes) by 91% to 923 units (24% of market) in Russia in I quarter of 2011 but it gave the first place to Scania (1206 units, the 3,2 times growth), when the market of foreign vehicles in this segment increased 2,36 times to 3819 vehicles. According to the data of AUTOSTAT agency, the trucks park of MAN was 44383 vehicles in Russia as of beginning of 2011 and it had 1,3% share of total Russian trucks park. It should be also remarked that it is the second park by size among the foreign vehicles in Russia after Volvo brand.
