MAN is going to create a production in St. Petersburg

The German concern MAN will build a plant of production about 10 thousand heavy trucks a year in St. Petersburg. The government of St. Petersburg and the management of MAN will sign the contract this week, Kommersant wrote with refer to its sources.
The cost of MAN project will exceed 20 million EURO in the first stage, so it is about screwdriver assembly of vehicles. MAN is going to create the production of full cycle in future. By the words of sources, MAN could launch the screwdriver assembly in one of shops of Arsenal plant (General Motors also started the screwdriver assembly and then it built the plant in industrial zone Shushary. MAN considers the plant construction in Russia since 2008 and the concern was interested in Bryansk region then in Kaluga and finally it stopped the choice on St. Petersburg.
The experts suppose that MAN tries to economize and to avoid the high import duties for ready trucks and it is more likely that it wont create a production of full cycle. There is no sense to invest in the deep localization of heavy trucks in Russia as the sales are not big, the experts said. By the data of Ernst & Young, MAN sold 2 thousand heavy trucks in Russia during the period from January till September, Iveco 1,4 thousand units, Volvo and Scania about 1 thousand each. KAMAZ, by the data of Ernst&Young, sold more than 20 thousand trucks and the head of plant, Sergey Kogogin, said recently that its serious competitors are not new companies but the used foreign trucks.
