Otkritie Auto (auto business unit of Otkritie Bank) and analytical agency AUTOSTAT conducted a joint survey of the market of new passenger cars in Russia and determined its financial capacity* based on the results of April 2023. According to the results of the survey, in the second month of spring, Russians spent 202.2 billion rubles for the purchase of new cars. This is 9.3% higher than in March (184.9 billion rubles), and 2.6 times higher than the result of April 2022 (78.9 billion rubles). In total, 75.6 thousand new cars were sold in April, which is 8.2% higher than in March (69.9 thousand units), and 2.7 times higher than in April 2022 (28 thousand units). The share of Chinese brands in the structure of financial capacity of the market approached 50%. So, in April 2023, 33.2 thousand new cars from China were sold in the amount of 98.8 billion rubles, while in April last year - 3.5 thousand cars in the amount of 10 billion rubles.
In April, the share of spending by Russians for Chinese cars was 48.9%, or 4 times higher in compare with April 2022 (12.7%). For the year, the costs for "Chinese" cars that grew the most - almost 10 times. The amount of money spent has also increased for other market participants, but to a lesser extent.
For example, the purchase of cars of European brands in April cost 31.6 billion rubles (+8% in compare with the previous year's April), domestic - 24.8 billion rubles (an increase of 3.2 times), Korean - 21.2 billion rubles (+30.2%), Japanese - by 20.1 billion rubles (+36.7%), American - by 5.7 billion rubles (an increase of 7.2 times). At the same time, in terms of sales volumes, "Chinese" are also the leaders, followed by Russian brands (26.7 thousand units). Sales of other brands turned out to be noticeably lower: "Koreans" – 6.3 thousand units; "Japanese" - 4.3 thousand units; "Europeans" - 4.1 thousand units; "Americans" - 1 thousand units.
