20 years later: who owns the Russian car market?

Car imports to Russia tripled

During the last online broadcast “AUTOSTAT Operative. Operational information in the Russian car market. Results of April 2023" experts of "AUTOSTAT" agency spoke about the situation with the import of cars into our country.

Thus, during April, 33.8 thousand new cars and 34.7 thousand second-hand cars were imported to Russia. Despite the fact that these volumes were slightly lower than in March (37.2 thousand and 39.9 thousand units, respectively), they were three times higher than in April 2022.

According to the results of four months of this year, 120.4 thousand new cars were imported into the Russian Federation, which is 2.2 times higher than in January-April 2022. Used cars for the same period were imported in the amount of 141.1 thousand units - 3 times higher. At the same time, import volumes in 2023 are the highest in the last two years. One of the reasons for this is the withdrawal of a number of foreign brands from the Russian market. However, the executive director of "AUTOSTAT" agency Sergey Udalov believes that the import of cars, most likely, will not show sharp jumps and will remain at the current level.

In April, new cars were most often transported from China, which accounted for 68.2% of the total. The countries of the post-Soviet space follow: Kazakhstan (13.4%), Belarus (4.4%), Kyrgyzstan (4%) and Armenia (3.1%).

Used cars are still most often imported from Japan. Their share in April was 49.1%, although not so long ago it exceeded 90%. 17.8% of all used cars were imported from Armenia, 11.8% from Belarus, 8.9% from South Korea, and 3.5% from Kyrgyzstan. And if cars from other countries are mainly brought from Armenia (often in transit), then locally produced cars are most often brought from South Korea, experts say.
