Otkritie Auto (auto business block of Otkritie Bank) and the analytical agency AUTOSTAT conducted a joint survey of the new passenger car market in Russia and determined its financial capacity* in March 2023. According to the results of the survey, at the beginning of spring, Russians spent 184.9 billion rubles for the purchase of new cars. This is 28.1% higher than in February (144.4 billion rubles), but 11.6% lower than in March 2022 (209.1 billion rubles). In total, 69.9 thousand new cars were sold in the first spring month, which is 24.5% higher than in February (56.1 thousand units), but 11.4% lower than in March 2022 (78.9 thousand units). Five times less was spent for premium cars in March than for mass cars. In the first month of spring, the inhabitants of our country bought 2.8 thousand new cars of premium segment (including luxury brands), spending 30.5 billion rubles for this (+ 17.6% in financial capacity by February). Thus, the share of premium cars in the cost structure for the month decreased from 18% to 16.5%. In other words, this corresponds to a sixth of the total costs. The share of cars in the mass segment, on the contrary, increased from 82% to 83.5%.
The volume of their sales in March was 67.1 thousand units, and the purchase costs - 154.4 billion rubles (+30.4% in compare with February). Most of money is still spent for Chinese brand cars. So, in March, 28.8 thousand new cars from China were sold for the amount of 84.7 billion rubles (45.8% of total costs). It is also worth noting that the "Chinese" for the first time became the leaders of the Russian market in terms of sales volumes per month. Second place is occupied by European automakers with a result of 28.7 billion rubles and a share of 15.5%. Their sales in the first spring month were 3.8 thousand units. The third position was kept by Russian brands, for the products of which 24.5 billion rubles were spent (share - 13.2%). At the same time, in March, domestic cars (25.8 thousand units) were sold less than Chinese ones. The remaining costs belonged to Korean (21.4 billion rubles), Japanese (20.2 billion rubles) and American (5.5 billion rubles) brands. Separately, it is worth noting that for the last month, the costs increased for all brands, and they increased most of all among the "Chinese" ones (+41.8%).
