The share of sales of crossovers and SUVs in the 1st quarter exceeded 63%

The SUV segment in the first quarter of 2023 accounted for 63.6% of the total sales of new passenger cars in our country. Such data were announced by the executive director of "AUTOSTAT" agency Sergey Udalov during his report at the auto business forum "FinAuto - 2023. Financial instruments of the car market". The share of sales of crossovers and SUVs in our country has been continuously growing since 2016, and the achieved figure is a record one. If in 2021-2022 it exceeded 50%, now it has overcome the 60% mark. Experts of "AUTOSTAT" agency explain the rapid growth of the share of SUVs by the fact that about 80% of the Russian market today belongs to Chinese and Russian brands (in fact, LADA). And if the "Chinese" had previously correctly relied on crossovers, then AvtoVAZ has two SUVs in its current line - Niva Legend and Niva Travel.

The domestic manufacturer also has LADA Granta, which is a market bestseller. Hence the share of segment B, which in the 1st quarter amounted to almost 30%. Among other results of the car market, one can note an increase in the share of sales of station wagons (from 59% to 65%), which is also associated with an increase in the market share of crossovers and SUVs. But the share of sedans, on the contrary, decreased (from 25% to 19%). Experts also draw attention to the sharp drop in the share of the premium segment - from 10% (in January-March 2022) to 4% (in the 1st quarter of 2023). The share of "diesel" has also decreased noticeably - from 8.4% to 4.1%.

These are interconnected things, since the share of diesel cars in the premium segment has always been high. And with the cessation of deliveries of European and Japanese cars to our market, both indicators began to decrease.
