Experts from Otkritie Avto (the auto business unit of Otkritie Bank) and the AUTOSTAT agency conducted a joint survey of the Russian used car market and determined its financial capacity* based on the results of February 2023. According to the results of the survey, in the last month of winter, Russians spent 382.3 billion rubles for the purchase of used cars, which is 10% higher than in January (347.4 billion rubles). At the same time, 394.3 thousand used cars were purchased in February, which is 9% higher than a month earlier (361.1 thousand units). Most of the money in February was spent for older cars. Thus, 134.6 billion rubles were spent for cars aged 10 years and older at the end of winter, which is 35.2% of the total amount of money.

And this is exactly the same as in January. Residents of our country spent a little less money for cars of other age categories, but in comparable amounts. If they spent 124.5 billion rubles for cars under the age of 5 years, then 123.2 billion rubles were spent for cars of the “5-9 years” category. This is 32.6% and 32.2% of the total financial capacity of the market, respectively. Over 70% of all money was spent in February for "Europeans" and "Japanese". Thus, over the last winter month, 114.5 thousand used Japanese cars were purchased for the amount of 128.1 billion rubles (33.5% of total costs), and 95.1 thousand European cars for 146.5 billion rubles (38 .3% of the financial capacity of the secondary market). The third place in the structure of financial capacity of the secondary market was occupied by Korean brands. They accounted for 13.8%, which is equivalent to 52.9 billion rubles. In monetary terms, they are ahead of Russian brands (27.4 billion rubles), but in absolute terms they are inferior to them (51.4 thousand against 92.9 thousand units).

Next in the ranking of costs are used cars of American brands: 21.1 billion rubles were spent for the purchase of 31.5 thousand of these cars. The least popular in the "secondary" is still "Chinese" (in February, they were bought 7.4 thousand units), so less money is spent for them (6.1 billion rubles). It is also worth noting that, in compare with January, costs increased across all brands. This affected the "Americans" the most (+13%), and the least noticeable – the "Chinese" (+2%).
