Otkritie Auto (auto business unit of Otkritie Bank) and the analytical agency AUTOSTAT conducted a joint study of the new passenger car market in Russia and determined its financial capacity* in January 2023. According to the results of the survey, at the beginning of the year, Russians spent 111.6 billion rubles for the purchase of new cars. This is 39% lower than in January 2022 (183.3 billion rubles). At the same time, the costs of residents of the Russian Federation decreased for all brands, except for Chinese and domestic ones. In total, 45.2 thousand new cars were purchased in January, which is 47% lower than a year ago (85.9 thousand units). Over the year, the share of premium cars in the structure of the financial capacity of the market has decreased by almost half. In the first month of the year, Russians bought about 1.5 thousand new premium segment cars (81% less than in January 2022), by spending 16.7 billion rubles (-66%) for it. Thus, the share of premium cars in the cost structure decreased from 27% to 15% for the year. But the share of cars in the mass segment increased from 73% to 85%, the volume of their purchases in January was 43.8 thousand units (-44% in compare with January 2022), and the costs - 94.8 billion rubles (-30%).

According to the results of January, 17.2 thousand new cars of Chinese brands were purchased in our country. In total, they spent 50.9 billion rubles, which is almost 46% of the financial capacity of the market. At the same time, a year ago, in January 2022, 15.5 billion rubles were spent for the “Chinese”, i.e. 3.2 times less. In terms of the amount of money spent, other brands lag behind the Chinese ones at times. Thus, the share of European companies in January was 16% (17.8 billion rubles), domestic - 15% (17 billion rubles), Korean - 11% (12.1 billion rubles), Japanese - 10% (11 billion rubles). The remaining 2.5% belong to American brands (2.8 billion rubles).

In quantitative terms, the “Chinese” are second only to Russian cars, which in January sold 18.4 thousand units. This is slightly more than 40% of the total market volume. Chinese brands accounted for 38%. And all the rest brands (European, Japanese, Korean and American) took only about 22%, and the volume of purchases of each of them does not even reach 4 thousand units.

* Financial capacity - the amount of money that Russians spent for the purchase of new passenger cars during the reporting period. Calculated on the basis of weighted average prices of new cars and their sales for the reporting month.
