New LCV market fell by 52% in January 2023

At the end of January 2023, 4,171 new light commercial vehicles (LCV) were purchased in our country, which is 52% lower than in January 2022. This is reported by experts of analytical agency "AUTOSTAT" with reference to the data of JSC "PPK"*. Domestic GAZ remained the leader in this segment, owning almost 56% of the total (a year ago, its share was 47.4%). So, in the first month 2023, Russians purchased 2,326 light commercial vehicles of this brand (-43.6% in compare with January 2022). In second place, far behind the leader, there is another Russian brand - UAZ. With the result of 876 sold cars (-6.4%), it also increased its market share - from 10.8% to 21%.

Thus, about 77% of the LCV market in January belonged to the products of two domestic car plants. The third position in the brand rating is occupied by domestic LADA (288 units; -68.8%). Fourth in terms of results (and the first among foreign cars) was American Ford (179 units), which has the strongest drop in the top-10 (-87.7%). Thus, its market share decreased almost 4 times (from 16.8% to 4.3%). Korean Hyundai finishes the TOP-5 with 105 units (-19.8%). Among the remaining brands, none more managed to cross the threshold of 100 purchased cars. Experts noted that LCV market has changed not only in terms of volume, but also qualitatively: the number of brands available for purchase has become smaller.

In addition, we saw new “names” in the top-10: Chinese JAC and Dongfeng, which took seventh and tenth positions, as well as domestic Sollers, which ended up in eighth place. Four of the top five market-leading models are of domestic origin. Most of all, GAZ Gazelle Next cars were bought in January - 1,391 units. It is followed by UAZ 3909 (454 units), GAZ 3302 (263 units), GAZ 2752 (243 units) and Ford Transit (178 units).
