How and why is the electric vehicle market growing in Russia?

New luxury car market fell by 58% in 2022

In 2022, Russian residents purchased only 376 new luxury cars, which is 57.6% lower than in 2021. This is reported by the experts of the agency "AUTOSTAT" with reference to the data of JSC "PPK"*. Recall that since the spring of 2022, official deliveries of almost all luxury cars to our country have been banned. On the other hand, it is possible to bring them to Russia using the parallel import mechanism. Among the luxury category, most of all new cars of the Rolls-Royce brand were bought in our country last year - 104 units, which is more than a quarter of the total. In compare with 2021, its volumes fell by 60%. The second place was taken by Bentley brand (84 units; -74%), and the third was Maserati (76 units; 15 times), which, on the contrary, sharply increased its performance. In addition, in 2022, Russians purchased 40 new Lamborghini cars (-77%), 36 new Ferraris (-35%), 31 Aurus (+41%) and 5 Aston Martin (-89%).

70% of all luxury car purchases were in Moscow (264 units). More than 10% of total was purchased in the Moscow region (40 units). And together with St. Petersburg (18 units), in total, these three metropolitan regions accounted for more than 85% of the new luxury market. Among the other regions, Krasnodar Territory is the leader, where 11 luxury cars were purchased in 2022. Sverdlovsk region (8 units) also entered the TOP-5 in terms of purchased "luxury" volume. In other 24 regions, from 1 to 3 such cars were purchased.
