Experts spoke about alternative ways of developing the Russian automotive industry

Last year, Russian auto industry faced a blockage in the supply of components and the departure of Western automakers from our country, and today it is quite actively loading the vacated capacities with mainly licensed assembly of Chinese cars. The experts interviewed by the agency "AUTOSTAT" told how this meets the goal of achieving the technological sovereignty of the Russian automotive industry, and what are the alternative ways of its development in the current geopolitical and economic conditions. "Russian car plants are massively organizing SKD or SKD assembly of Chinese cars. Of course, such a scenario entails dependence on Chinese partners and does not bring us closer to technological sovereignty. The point is that, in fact, there are no other options for the development of the domestic auto industry. We need to do what we can do at the moment, but at the same time we need to create the prerequisites for localization to begin now," says Andrey Olkhovsky, General Director of Avtodom Group of Companies.

In turn, the deputy head of the analytics department of the agency "AUTOSTAT" Viktor Pushkarev also believes that in order to ensure technological sovereignty, it is clearly necessary to localize the production of all the most important auto components in the territory of the Russian Federation. And this means that if it is planned to launch a full-fledged sovereign production of a particular Chinese car model, then it is necessary to create a full-fledged pool of enterprises supplying its auto components. A natural question arises, how will this be created: by "copying" all technologies and equipment by Russian specialists or by purchasing on a turnkey basis from Chinese companies? No comments have been heard yet from the organizers of the projects. Moreover, such a project requires colossal investments, which can only be provided by the state. And the possibility of investment by Chinese automakers in Russian production, according to the expert, should be treated with extreme skepticism.

"It is necessary to create a mechanism for collecting customs duties, economic benefits, preferences, tax holidays and other economic instruments for locally assembled cars with localization of more than 70%. In this case, there will be Chinese and other Asian companies that want to set up production in Russia. Well, it is necessary that the market still be at least 1.5 million units. Otherwise, production creating for a smaller market simply does not make sense," said Alexei Podshchekoldin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of BN-Motors.
