Drop of auto manufacture in I quarter 2009 will be catastrophic

The production volume of manufacture of passenger cars in the first quarter 2009 may be twice lower than last year"s. Such forecast is done by analysts of the agency "AUTOSTAT" according to the plans of the Russian car plants.
Experts say that last year the monthly rate of car assembly started in January from a level of 90,000 units and systematically grew up to October when it reached the level of 140,000 units per month. Since summer many enterprises stamped cars including those to the warehouse and every month aggravated the situation with overstock. Only in November facing the crisis influence in full the Russian car industry started to slip and nevertheless continued to work.
At the beginning of the year there will be the largest fall of production volumes, analysts predict. "So, if in the first quarter 2008 the Russian enterprises launched 331,100 passenger cars then in the first quarter of 2009 the production will not exceed 150,000-200,000 cars that means the manufacture fall can make from 40 to 60 %", the director of the agency "AUTOSTAT" Sergey Tselikov says. Then after car manufacturers there will also be shut down of manufacturers of auto components as many of them work in a rigid tempo in parallel with car plants.
According to Sergey Tselikov the measures taken now by the Russian government will start to bear real fruit not earlier than in spring. By that time the market demand can become more active a little. Firstly the beginning of a traditional spring season will play its role and secondly during the periods of market pauses the so-called "pent-up demand" is always forming.
The expert also notes that if the Russian ruble continues to depreciate compared to world currencies then the domestic goods will become more competitive in home market and correspondingly their market share will grow as well.
