Mazda announced its withdrawal from the Russian market


Japanese automaker Mazda Motor has signed an agreement to transfer to the Russian Sollers group its stake in a parity joint venture for the production of Japanese brand cars at the Mazda Sollers Manufacturing Rus plant in Vladivostok. According to Mazda's quarterly report, the agreement was signed on October 24th and will be implemented as soon as possible after receiving approval from the relevant authorities. The deal will be completed for a symbolic cost of 1 euro and includes an option for the Japanese automaker to buy out a stake in the joint venture for the next 3 years.

In connection with the exit from the Russian market and the transfer of a share in the business, Mazda Motor will suffer a loss of 12 billion yen (82 million dollars), Interfax reported. In turn, Sollers said that the company has already developed a plan to restart the plant in Vladivostok for the production of cars of other brands, which will take place in 2023. Recall that the joint venture between Mazda Motor and Sollers was established on the principles of a 50/50 partnership in 2012. The design capacity of the Mazda Sollers plant in Vladivostok allows the production of 100,000 vehicles per a year.

The volume of investments in the project was about 10 billion rubles. The plant in Vladivostok produced Mazda CX-9 full-size crossover, Mazda CX-5 crossover and Mazda6 sedan. According to the results of ten months of 2022, 9487 Mazda cars were purchased in Russia, which is 59.5% lower in compare with the same period of last year, experts of the AUTOSTAT agency reported with reference to the data of JSC "PPK"*. At the same time, the most popular Mazda model in the Russian market in the reporting period was CX-5 crossover with 7,095 vehicles (-54.1%).
