Opening Auto: in September, Russians spent almost 94 billion rubles for the purchase of new cars


Opening Avto (auto business unit in Opening Bank) and the analytical agency AUTOSTAT conducted a joint survey of the new passenger car market in Russia and determined its financial capacity* in September 2022. According to the results of the survey, in the first month of autumn, Russians spent 93.6 billion rubles on the purchase of cars. This is 11% higher than a month earlier (in August - 84.1 billion rubles), and 64% less than in September 2021 (260.7 billion rubles).

At the same time, the costs of Russians grew the most among Chinese brands, for which the most money was spent in early autumn. In September of this year, 45.4 thousand new cars were sold, which is 11% higher than in August (40.9 thousand units). In September, the share of premium cars in the structure of financial capacity was 7%. Thus, this indicator is below the 10% mark for the second month in a row. Residents of Russia in the first month of autumn purchased 877 new cars of the premium segment (5% lower than in August), spending 6.6 billion rubles (+2%) for them. Accordingly, the share of cars in the mass segment was 93%. The volume of their sales in September reached 44.5 thousand units (+11% in compare with August), and the purchase costs - 87 billion rubles (+12%).

For the fourth month in a row, Russians spend the most money on the purchase of cars of Chinese brands. So, in September, 12.4 thousand new cars were purchased from China for the amount of 35.9 billion rubles (38% of total costs). Second place is kept by Korean automakers with a result of 22.4 billion rubles and a share of 24%. Their sales in the first autumn month were 7.3 thousand units. The third position was kept by Russian brands, for which 18.2 billion rubles were spent (share - 19%). At the same time, it was sold most of all domestic cars in September (20.6 thousand units), but due to the lowest weighted average price, they are inferior in money to the “Chinese” and “Koreans”.
