The Russian authorities are not going to ban cars with right-hand steering wheel

The federal authorities are not going to impose ban in Russia for usage of cars with the right wheel, informed Vyacheslav Fetisov, the senator from the Legislative Assembly of Primorski Krai after the meeting with Rashid Nurgaliev, the Minister of Internal Affairs and Victor Kiryanov, the chief of STSI (the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate).
"Both the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the chief of STSI assured that is not planned to impose any bans or restrictions on auto transport with right-hand wheel, RIA Novosti quotes the words of Mr. Fetisov.
According to the data of the agency AUTOSTAT as of the 1st of July 2008 there were already more than 11.3 million units in the Russian park of foreign cars. Meanwhile 2.3 million passenger cars (20%) registered by the Russian STSI (the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate) have the right steering wheel. According to the report Foreign car park in Russia as of 1.07.08 - passenger cars most of all the share of right steering wheel is fixed in the parks of foreign cars in the Far East (84%) and Siberia (71%). There is a significant share (22%) in Ural. The right steering wheel is less popular in the European part of Russia. The share of such cars constitutes 7,4% in the south, in the Volga region - 3,6%, in the centre part of Russia - 3,1% and in the north-west of Russia there is less than 1 percent (0,9%).
