Rosatom began the construction of the first gigafactory in Russia

On October 14th, Rosatom State Corporation started the construction of a plant for the production of lithium-ion batteries in the Kaliningrad region. The largest Russian enterprise with a capacity of 4 GWh per a year will meet the needs of domestic manufacturers of electric vehicles in traction lithium-ion batteries, and the electric grid complex in stationary energy storage systems.

According to the press service of Rosatom, the first batteries will roll off the assembly line of the Russian gigafactory in 2025. When designing the plant, modern technological equipment was incorporated that makes it possible to produce the world-class products. The production capacity will make it possible to provide up to 50,000 electric vehicles with lithium-ion batteries. In case of confirmation of demand for products, it is possible to introduce the second and third phases until the total production capacity reaches 14 GWh.

The plant will carry out a full cycle of production of lithium-ion batteries - operations from the process of mixing the components of the cathode and anode masses to the final control of the finished product. The enterprise will comply with all environmental standards, and all necessary environmental protection measures will be taken. The total area of the plant will be 23.6 hectares. The area of production buildings and infrastructure is 135 thousand sq.m. Investments in the project are estimated at no less than 26 billion rubles.

On the part of Rosatom, the project for the implementation of energy storage systems is being carried out by an industry integrator, LLC RENERA. Recall that in December of 2021, Avtotor signed a cooperation agreement with it in order to create in the Russian Federation the production of cars of various classes on electric traction, components for them (including an electric battery) using RENERA products in electric vehicles that it is planned to produce at the production of "Avtotor". Kaliningrad Automobile Plant plans to start the production of electric vehicles and engines for them in 2023.
