Experts spoke about the main autumn trends in the used car market

According to the preliminary estimation of the agency "AUTOSTAT", the Russian market of passenger cars with mileage in September may reach about 450 thousand units. In this case, it will again show the growth (+2.6%) in compare with the previous month. “This is largely due to the growth in imports of used cars.

The growth of September to August roughly corresponds to the import figures. But the internal turnover of the secondary market is not growing so much,” says the executive director of the agency “AUTOSTAT”, Sergey Udalov. The expert noted separately the trends in the secondary car market. He noted that the used cars "dipped" less than the market of new cars. Traditionally, this segment is more inertial, it grows more slowly and falls more slowly. As for prices in the used car market, a slight increase in them is still ongoing.

This is due to the shortage of cars, as the market of new cars has shrunk a lot. The current situation in the country is pushing people towards longer car ownership. Probably, due to the shortage of cars in the market, their prices will not fall. And as the turnover of cars is higher in the older segments, prices may remain at the current level there. By touching upon the topic of used car imports, the experts agreed that there is no total import in this segment yet: in September, the whole import of used cars to Russia was 23.3 thousand units, and almost all of these cars were imported by individuals.

Therefore, this quantity, in comparison with the level of the monthly volume of the used car market (450 thousand units), does not affect greatly the total volume of the secondary market. Experts believe that if sales of used cars remain in the volumes of August and September, for the whole year this will fully coincide with the forecasts made by analysts earlier. They believe that in 2022 the volume of the secondary market will be no more than 4.7 - 4.8 million units, i.e. about 18% lower than a year before.
