Russia takes the first place of car import in the world

Russia takes the first place of car import in the world. Besides, it also leads in quantity of old foreign cars, the operation life of which has been expired. The honorable chairman of the Volkswagen company Karl H. Hahn shared this information at the conference AutoRussia 2008 Winter in St.-Petersburg which yesterday came to the end.
According to the estimation of the analytic department of "AUTOSTAT" in 2008 2.12 million passenger cars will be imported to Russia including 1.69 million new cars and 430,000 second-hand ones. It is a record figure for the whole Russian history. According to Sergey Tselikov, the director of the agency "AUTOSTAT", next year the car import may decrease almost twice. It is connected with the reduction of the Russian market capacity because of the financial crisis as well as the replacement of imported foreign cars by cars of local assembly. Besides, next year the customs duties for new cars will be increased 5 percent and the import of second-hand cars will lose economic sense because of new rates. Besides, now according to Sergey Tselikovs estimation more than 200,000 foreign cars are stocked in the dealer outlets and not sold. In conditions of this sales crisis many of them cannot find the buyers up to spring of next year and some units remain not sold till summer.
Nevertheless, replacement of import by local assembly is already actively going. So, according to the analysts estimation of "AUTOSTAT" for 10-month sales of this year 28 percent of the foreign car market falls on the share of the Russian assembly. Thus, the share of local assembly in the total sales volume of SsangYong makes almost 90 percent, Fiat - about 80 percent, Skoda - 74 percent, Renault - almost 70 percent, Hyundai - about 50 percent, Volkswagen - 46 percent and Ford - hardly less than third (32 percent).
