"Opening Auto" (auto business block in Opening Bank) and AUTOSTAT agency conducted a joint study of the new passenger car market in Russia and determined its financial capacity** in July 2022. According to the results of the survey, in the second month of summer, Russians spent 70.6 billion rubles on the purchase of cars. This is only 1% lower than a month before (in June - 71.1 billion rubles), and 72% lower than in June 2021 (255.1 billion rubles). At the same time, 32.1 thousand new cars were sold in July of this year, which is 9% higher than in June (29.4 thousand).
A slight decrease in financial capacity with an increase in the market volumes is associated with a change in the sales structure: most of the July sales volumes were domestic brands with the lowest weighted average price. In the cost structure by segments, crossovers and SUVs continue to keep the undisputed leadership, accounting for 68%. We also note that a tenth of all the money was spent on premium cars. For the second month in a row, the residents of the Russian Federation spend the most money on cars of Chinese brands. So, in July, the Russians bought 8.6 thousand new Chinese cars, and 24 billion rubles were spent on them (34% of total costs).
Korean automakers are again satisfied with the second place with a result of 19.8 billion rubles. Their sales in July were 7.3 thousand units. The volume of spent funds on European brands was 11.3 billion rubles. During the month, there were sold 3.8 thousand such cars. Of the listed market participants, only the "Koreans" managed to increase their share in financial capacity - from 24% in June to 28% in July. For the "Chinese" it decreased from 39% to 34%, while for the "Europeans" it remained at the same level (16%).
** Financial capacity is the amount of money that Russians spent in total on the purchase of new passenger cars during the reporting period. It was calculated on the basis of weighted average prices of new cars and their sales for the reporting month.
