Cheap cars from Iran may appear in Russia

A new player, Iran, may appear in the Russian car market. The head of the Russian center "Iranians Abroad" announced the existing agreements for the assembly of cars in our country, and under the revived Russian brands "Moskvich", "Volga" and "Pobeda". Theoretically, the scheme looks to be working, but there are a number of specific nuances, as Iran itself has been under Western sanctions for many years.

There are a number of automakers in the Islamic Republic, among which, first of all, it is worth noting Iran Khodro - it is well acquainted with the Russian market, it supplied cars under the name Samand. In Iran, the brand is engaged not only in the production of its own cars, but also in the assembly of Chinese Haima and Dongfeng models, as well as French Peugeot. However, the latter do not differ in modernity - the youngest French car is the 2008 crossover of the 2013 model. IKCO's own model range is completely built on the same French platforms of the PSA concern, only at the end of the 20th century. The only model that, in theory, could appear in Russia is the Tara sedan, turned Peugeot 301, known in our country since 2012.

According to unofficial data, the modern KMC J7 model of the private Iranian company Kerman Motor may become the Moskvich. This vehicle is a localized Chinese Sehol A5 Plus sedan manufactured by KAMAZ's partner, JAC. Perhaps the Chinese need the reassembly scheme through Iran only to circumvent sanctions.

According to Sergey Firsov, Executive Director of EXPOCAR, the Russian automotive market will have definitely a serious crisis and significant structural changes. The probability of the appearance of new manufacturers from Asian countries is high - these can be either independent brands or joint ones with European or American companies. In this case, it will be possible to see familiar cars in the Russian market, but under new names.

“It is clear that the place of brands that have left Russia can be taken first of all by companies from China. Only now they are unlikely to want to build new factories in our country (or occupy the vacated areas). It is likely that they will be able to dictate their own rules of the game and will certainly insist on benefits when delivering cars from their factories. Thus, in the worst case scenario, we will be left with a small domestic production plus Chinese imports,” says Igor Morzharetto, editor-in-chief of Radio Avtodor.
