AEB: Russian car market fell by 75% in July 2022

Sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia fell by 74.9% in July to 32,412 vehicles. According to the results of seven months of 2022, the Russian car market was 368,850 vehicles (-60.5%), according to the data of the Association of European Businesses. Meanwhile, according to the data of the AUTOSTAT agency and Electronic Passport JSC, the volume of the Russian market of new cars in July 2022 was 35583 units, which is also 4 times lower in compare with the same month of the previous year.

At the same time, experts note that in relation to June of this year, the Russian car market shows the growth (+9%). Since the beginning of the year, 387,712 passenger cars have been purchased in Russia, which is 58.5% lower than in January-July 2021. "The data of JSC "Electronic Passport", which is used by the agency "AUTOSTAT" when assessing the state of the market, give a complete picture. Firstly, all market players are covered there, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, MINI, as well as Chery and EXEED, which have ceased to provide information on their sales to the AEB since May. At the same time, Chinese brands have already become key players in the Russian car market. Secondly, our statistics also take into account cars imported through parallel imports and bought by Russians. Thirdly, our market data is real buyers, i.e. those who bought the car. After all, a dealer could buy a car from a distributor, for example, in March, reporting on the sale, but in reality the car could be sold in June that we see in our statistics," explains Azat Timerkhanov, head of the press service of the AUTOSTAT agency.

Leadership in the market is held by the domestic brand LADA - Russians purchased 10,400 of these cars the last month (-70.6%). Among foreign cars, Kia remains the most popular, the result of which was 4004 cars (-77.7%). The third line is occupied by Hyundai with 3397 sold cars (-76.9%). Three Chinese brands follow at once: Chery (2577 units, -37.6%), Geely (2323 units, -6.5%) and Haval (2155 units, -25.9%). The TOP-10 of leaders of the Russian car market in July also included: Renault (1780 units, -84.7%), Toyota (1059 units, -86.6%), EXEED (1012 units, an increase of 7 times) and Volkswagen (873 units, -89.8%).
