"Opening Auto": the costs of Russians for the purchase of cars began to grow again

"Opening Auto" (auto business block in Otkritie Bank) and the analytical agency AUTOSTAT conducted a joint study of the market for new passenger cars in Russia and determined its financial capacity* based on the results of June 2022. According to the results of the survey, in the first summer month, the residents of the Russian Federation spent 71.1 billion Rubles for the purchase of cars. This is 38% higher than a month earlier (in May - 51.5 billion rubles), but 4 times lower than in June 2021 (290 billion rubles). At the same time, 29.4 thousand new cars were sold in June of this year, which is 36% higher than in May (21.6 thousand).

Thus, for the first time since March, the cost of purchase of cars increased. As before, Russians spent most of their money for the purchase of crossovers and SUVs, the share of which in the financial capacity of the market increased to 72% in June (64% in May). But in terms of the countries of origin of brands, the leadership was first won by the "Chinese", who managed to get ahead of the "Koreans" in terms of money. In the first summer month, new passenger cars from Chinese manufacturers sold 9.4 thousand units, and 28 billion rubles were spent for them. Thus, the "Chinese" have become leaders not only in sales, but also in the financial capacity of the car market. In turn, the Korean brands that excelled in May, this time are satisfied with the second place with a result of 16.8 billion rubles.

Their sales in June were 6.5 thousand units. The third-ranked European brands spent RUB 11.4 billion. During the month, 4.1 thousand such cars were sold. Only the "Chinese" managed to increase their share in the financial capacity of the market. Moreover, it tripled - from 13% in May to 39% in June. On the contrary, among the "Koreans", it decreased – from 32% to 24%, and among the "Europeans" – from 27% to 16%.
* Financial capacity - the amount of money that Russians spent in total for the purchase of new passenger cars during the reporting period. It was calculated on the basis of weighted average prices of new cars and their sales for the reporting month.
