The Russian auto industry is planned to be transferred to the Euro-6 eco-standard

Ministry of Industry and Trade has begun the preparing of draft amendments to the technical regulations "On the safety of vehicles", which will extend the requirements of the Euro-6 environmental class to the release of cars into circulation in the Russian Federation. The transition is planned to be carried out in the range of 2025-2028. As a part of the same research work, the Ministry of Industry and Trade intends to prepare an analysis of law enforcement practice regarding the regulation of production and setting requirements for electric vehicles, as well as vehicles running on hydrogen fuel.

According to Igor Korovkin, executive director of the Association of Automobile Manufacturers of Russia (AAMR), the production of most of the complex fuel automotive components necessary for car factories can be established in Russia, some of them can be found in China, Iran, Egypt, including parallel import. The Euro-5 environmental standard currently in force in Russia for all new cars was introduced on January 1st, 2016. In the spring of 2022, its operation in the country was suspended due to sanctions and a halt in the supply of high-tech auto components. The introduction of Euro-6 in the current conditions is almost impossible, as the Russian auto industry is now unable to ensure the production of cars that even comply with Euro-3 on its own, believes Sergey Burgazliev, an independent automotive industry consultant.

According to him, in order to ensure a high environmental class, not only expensive equipment is required, but the fuel itself in Russia must comply with the Euro-6 standard. In turn, the GAZ Group notes that the technological solution for Euro-6 has already been created for foreign markets - in particular, at GAZelle NN, which is assembled in Turkey for the European market. However, at the moment the plant depends on the availability of imported components.
