Volkswagen may sell plant in Kaluga

The German automaker Volkswagen has begun preparations for the sale of its plant in Kaluga. According to Gazeta.Ru citing its sources, the company has already been visited by two delegations of potential buyers from Kazakhstan and Austria, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The Russian office of Volkswagen did not comment on this information.

Meanwhile, Jan Witte, who had been appointed only a month earlier, was replaced by Gerrit Spengler as the head of Volkswagen Group Rus. Until that moment, the latter held the position of director of personnel in the Russian subsidiary of Volkswagen, which also indirectly indicates preparations for the sale of assets. The production capacity of the Volkswagen plant in Kaluga is 225,000 vehicles per year. The group's investments in the enterprise amounted to 570 million Euros, and in total in the project - 774 million Euros.

Earlier, Volkswagen Group Rus announced the closure of its office in Nizhny Novgorod and leaving the production site at GAZ. In turn, the GAZ Group said that the liquidation of production, where contract assembly for Volkswagen Group Rus was carried out, is not planned, and GAZ aims to ensure an alternative loading of these capacities.

Recall that the Volkswagen Group Rus plants in Kaluga and Nizhny Novgorod stopped the car production in early March due to Russia's special military operation in Ukraine and the ensuing problems with the supply of components. The plant in Kaluga produced Volkswagen Tiguan crossover, Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Rapid liftbacks. At the facilities of the GAZ Group, the contract assembly of the Volkswagen Taos, Skoda Kodiaq and Karoq crossovers, as well as the Skoda Octavia liftback was carried out.
