The Russian automotive market is decreasing, but sales of electric vehicles in the country are growing. This conclusion was made by the experts of AUTOSTAT agency based on the analysis of the data from Electronic Passport company. If in the first half of 2022, the new passenger car market decreased by more than half (-56%), the situation in the electric vehicle segment was completely opposite. During six months, Russian customers bought 1,278 new electric vehicles, which is 53% more than in the same period last year. About a half (46.5%) of the electric vehicle market came from Tesla - during six months, residents of the Russian Federation became owners of 594 such vehicles, which is 3.5 times more than in January-June 2021.

According to the director of AUTOSTAT agency Sergey Tselikov, these are the electric vehicles which were imported at the end of 2021, before the rollback of preferential customs clearance. We should remind that until 31 December 2021, there were zero duties on the electric vehicles imported to Russia, and from 1 January 2022, they are imported on a common basis. “The monthly downward trend is already obvious. And the growth in electric vehicle sales in Russia will considerably reduce over the next months,” the expert says. About a quarter of the electric vehicle market was formed by two German brands - Audi (178 vehicles; +2%) and Porsche (139 vehicles; -50%). Thus, all three brands generate over 70% of new electric vehicle sales in our country.

It is quite logical that they dominate in the model rating. In the first half of the year, the leader here was the Tesla Model Y with 277 new vehicles sold. Another Tesla – the Model 3 - was a little behind (254 vehicles). The Audi e-tron (171 vehicles) took the third place. We should also mention the Porsche Taycan (139 vehicles), whose sales exceeded a hundred units.
