  • 21.12.18 How many cars per thousand inhabitants are sold in Russia?

Analytic agency "AUTOSTAT" conducted a study of the passenger car market in Russia. It covered both new cars, and used ones, and in all federal districts of the country. According to the survey, for the year (from November of 2017 to October of 2018), 48 cars were sold per one thousand Russians, incl. 11 new cars and 37 used ones.

Interest in buying cars from bankrupt debtors increased in Russia

The shortage of vehicles and rising prices stimulated customers in Russian to search for new sources for buying cars. Someone risked bringing them from Kazakhstan and Georgia, someone from the Emirates and Iran. However, interest in other opportunities also became more active. New variants for such a purchase are online trading platforms where debtors' vehicles are displayed (in case of bankruptcies). This is reported by RBC, referring to Portal DA - Sberbank's marketplace for the asset sales. Thus, according to the marketplace, in January-May 2022, 4.2 thousand vehicles of citizens undergoing bankruptcy procedures were sold via the online trading platforms all over the country. That is 1.8 times more than in the same period in 2021. Representatives of large bankrupt trading platforms confirm this trend of increasing interest. During five months of 2022, the interregional e-trading system registered an increase in the sales of passenger cars of individuals by 117.8% over the year (1.2 thousand deals). Moreover, this Spring the number of such deals grew by 11.8% compared to the beginning of the year.

According to the Remote Trading Center, the sales of vehicles of individuals undergoing bankruptcy procedures increased by 152% over the year. "Vehicles have consistently ranked first in the number of lots since this Spring," a representative of the Center told reporters. According to experts there is a number of reasons for this growth. One of them is that the number of bankrupt individuals increased significantly. Secondly, the demand for vehicles grew; the number of applications per lot increased. According to Portal DA, this year, on average, about 5 applications for one auto-lot were submitted (vs. 3 applications a year ago).

A pro argument for such a purchase is the fact that for various reasons, these sites offer more affordable prices. As a rule, the initial price for the displayed vehicle is determined at least one and a half months before the start of the auction (during the Spring price growth, this was very significant), and in addition, most of the cars put up for auction in 2022 were purchased more than three years ago for quite a different price.
