In June this year, residents of the Russian Federation bought 6,875 new Chinese passenger cars, which is 21% of the total market. This was found out by the experts of AUTOSTAT agency after the analyses of the data of Electronic Passport company. The experts note the rapid growth of the share of the Chinese brands in the Russian market during the past three months. If in January - March it was 9.5%, in April it came up to 12.6%, in May grew up to 16.9%.
In June, their share came up to 21%, which is a record. That means, every fifth new passenger car sold was from China. According to the head of the press service of AUTOSTAT agency, Azat Timerkhanov, Chinese automakers took advantage of the situation in the Russian market. "While European and Japanese companies banned import and assembly of their vehicles in Russia under the sanctions, Chinese manufacturers continue their supplies. Haval enterprise in Tula region also operates. So, it is not surprising that the share of some manufactures is decreasing while the share of other brands is growing," the expert explains. While the share of Chinese brands has more than doubled since the beginning of 2022, the market of Japanese brands, on the contrary, decreased (from 18% to 11%).
The same applies to German (from 12% to 6%) and French (from 10.5% to 7%) brands. As a result, Chinese companies are already in the Top-3 in terms of sales. Only Russian and Korean manufacturers were in front of them in June with 25.3% and 24.9%, respectively. However, Azat Timerkhanov believes that this is not the limit for the Chinese brands and they can rise even higher. "Last week (June 27 - July 3) Chinese brands about became market leaders with only two dozen vehicles behind! Therefore, at the current rate of supplies and production, they can leave behind the Korean manufacturers and might even compete with domestic brands in the future," he believes.
