Tire maker Nokian Tyres leaves Russia

The Finnish concern Nokian Tyres has decided to curtail its business in Russia because of the situation in Ukraine. As a part of this process, the company will write off approximately EUR 300 million worth of Russian assets in the second quarter of 2022. Taking into account the impairment, the net asset value of NokianTyres in Russia and Belarus as of May 31st, 2022 amounted to about 400 million Euros. As noted, the company will evaluate various options for exiting the business.

The leave will be carried out taking into account the rights of employees and current legislation. In addition, the Board of Directors of Nokian Tyres removed Andrey Pantyukhov from the leadership of the Russian-Asian direction of the company. Recall that in March of this year, Nokian Tyres announced the termination of investments in the production of car tires in Russia. At the same time, the company continued to produce tires at its plant in the Vsevolozhsk district of the Leningrad region. Meanwhile, the company decided to increase the capacity of its factories in Finland and the US. Going forward, NokianTyres expects to manufacture all tires sold in Northern Europe in Nokia, Finland, and tires for North America also in Nokia and the US.

Today, the company develops and manufactures heavy tires in Finland. Truck and bus tires are developed in Finland and manufactured elsewhere. Recall that the Nokian Tires tire plant in Vsevolozhsk, Leningrad Region, was opened in September 2005. The production capacity of the enterprise, which is the largest tire production in Russia, is 17 million tires per year. In 2021, the Russian Nokian Tires plant was operating at full capacity, accounting for 82% of all the products manufactured by the concern, about 60% of the tires produced in Vsevolozhsk were exported. Nokian tyres, produced in Russia, were supplied to more than 40 countries of the world.

At the end of 2021, the market share of NokianTyres in Russia in terms of sales of tires to distributors in pieces reached 32.6% (in segments A + B), which was a record in the entire history of the division.
