Great Wall will not build a plant in Russia

The Chinese auto manufacturer Great Wall Motor has finally refused the plans to build a car plant in Russia. The authorities of Tatarstan and Great Wall have decided to liquidate the established for factory building JV "Great wall Alabuga auto" in which 74.76 percent belongs to the Chinese party and 25.24 percent - to the Russian republic.
The newspaper "Vedomosti" writes that Great Wall filed an application in Ministry of economic development and trade at the beginning of 2007, requesting to give privileges for component import under the decree about the industrial assembly and the resident status of a special economic zone "Alabuga". The company planned to start the production at a new plant with capacities of 75,000 cars per year at the end of last year. Great Wall wanted to launch a Hover SUV, two sedans of B-class - Peri and Florid - and also a "premium-class sedan Cowry. The cheapest car from Great Wall should cost $10,000. However there was not any Chinese company in the list which received privileges from the government.
According to the data of "AUTOSTAT" for nine months of this year 7,251 Great Wall"s cars were sold in Russia including pickups. As it is said in the marketing report "Car industry of China and its expansion on the Russian market" if during the first years of brand sales in Russia the basis were commercial vehicles then since 2007 Great Wall"s SUVs have become the most demanded models. So, from January to September of 2008 sales of the Russian best seller of this brand, Hover SUV, have constituted 3,082 units and sales of G5 model have been 2,849 units. Thus, SUVs covered 81.8 percent of the total sales volume of Great Wall in Russia. It is worth mentioning that in August the Russian dealers received the first compact car of the brand, Peri, and for two months 54 such cars have been sold. Next year Great Wall"s model line, present in Russia, should be added by one more hatchback, Florid, and also by a compact-van CoolBear.
