Sales of electric vehicles grew by 65% in Russia

From January to May 2022, 1,119 new electric vehicles were sold in Russia, which is 65% higher than in the same period of the previous year. According to the information of the analytic agency "AUTOSTAT", based on the data of JSC "Electronic Passport" (EPTS), the most popular electric car in the new car market was the American Tesla Model Y, sold in the amount of 248 units. In second place there is Tesla Model 3, which was purchased by 211 Russians. The top three was closed by the premium German model Porsche Taycan (131 units). The TOP-5 of the most popular in Russia also includes the products of the German automaker Audi - E-Tron (88 units) and E-TronSportback (70 units).

As for the rest of the model range, experts noticed that the range of electric vehicles purchased in our country has grown significantly: in January-May, it already included about 50 different models, and a year ago there were no more than two dozen. It should be noted that the growth in sales of electric vehicles continues against the backdrop of a strong decline in the Russian car market. According to the director of AUTOSTAT Sergey Tselikov, the reason for this growth is as follows: “Now those electric cars that were imported at the end of 2021, before the abolition of preferential customs clearance, find their owners and register. The monthly downward trend is already visible. And in the coming months, the growth in sales of electric vehicles in Russia will noticeably decrease.

Recall that until December 31, 2021, there were zero duties on the import of electric vehicles into Russia, and from January 2022 they are imported on a general basis.” Almost a half of the sold electric cars (49%) were in Moscow and the Moscow Region (434 units and 115 units, respectively). Together with St. Petersburg (105 units), their share is about 60%. Among the non-capital regions, the leader is Krasnodar Territory, where 79 electric vehicles were purchased.
