Japan, as a part of a new package of sanctions, from June 17th will introduce a ban on the export to Russia of trucks, dump trucks, bulldozers and other equipment that contributes to the strengthening of industrial infrastructure. This was announced by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan Koichi Hagiuda. The document posted on the website of the Japanese Ministry, among the various industrial equipment prohibited for export to Russia, mentions trucks with a gross weight of 5 tons, trailers and semi-trailers, special vehicles on a chassis, as well as dump trucks designed for off-road use. Also there banned bulldozers, excavators, loaders and spare parts for wheeled vehicles used in ports, warehouses and airports by the Japanese authorities.

According to Gazeta.Ru, the Russian cargo market includes Japanese Isuzu, Fuso, Hino trucks, Komatsu dump trucks, Hitachi and Kato excavators and special equipment. Among Japanese manufacturers of trucks weighing over 3.5 tons, Isuzu has the largest sales volumes, which until recently had an assembly plant in Ulyanovsk in addition to deliveries of imported vehicles. At the end of 2021, Isuzu sold about 3 thousand vehicles in the country, according to the data of the analytical agency AUTOSTAT. According to Alexander Solntsev, editor-in-chief of the Commercial Transport and Technologies magazine, Korean Hyundai and Daewoo trucks can serve as an alternative for Japanese vehicles in the segment of medium-duty trucks, the supply of which was not announced to be stopped, although the assembly of Hyundai commercial vehicles in Kaliningrad was suspended.

The Russian Valdai Next from GAZ (with the cabin of the Chinese brand Foton) and KAMAZ Compass (localized Chinese JAC) are in the same class. However, it should be taken into account that the KAMAZ plant is primarily designed for the production of heavy equipment, and the light commercial version of the Compass is not ready yet. In turn, Chinese companies promise to replace the departed Japanese brands, and in recent months the demand for Chinese equipment has already increased. For example, Foton estimates the overall growth in demand in Russia for its equipment at 10-20%.
