Used car market forecast: what scenario will come true?

ade6e057-670-0.jpg

In the period from January to April, the development of the situation in the markets of new cars and used cars was fundamentally different. While the market of new cars in March already started a significant decline in compare with February (-20%), on the contrary, in the market of used cars there was a noticeable growth (+12%). It is clear that the demand was seriously "heated up" by such factors as the expected sharp reduction in the supply of new cars and the associated significant increase in prices of used cars.

In April, this excitement ended and the car market also “failed” in compare with March, but not as deep as the new market: by 17% versus 65%. Based on the results of 4 months, significant changes are already observed in the used car market. Thus, the vast majority of brands suffered double-digit sales losses; there were serious “reshuffles” in the rating of leading models, weighted average prices showed a steady increase, car loans dropped sharply, and so on.

It is clear that in the context of a new economic crisis, it is impossible to expect a repeat of the previous year's record of almost 6 million cars in 2022, and this raises the question: how deep will the recession be? And the answer to this question is extremely difficult, as it is associated with two key factors that determine the situation not only in the car market, but in the country: the deadline for completing the military special operation in Ukraine and international sanctions against Russia. Forecasts in this case can be built exclusively according to three scenarios: base, optimistic and pessimistic.
