How and why is the electric vehicle market growing in Russia?

Experts told how the crisis in the car market will affect dealer networks in Russia

Today in Russia there are 3.2 thousand official dealerships for the sale and maintenance of cars, however, in compare with the beginning of the year, their number has decreased by 17 car dealerships. What awaits dealer networks in Russia in the future, taking into account forecasts for the car market to fall by at least 50% in 2022, the suspension of car deliveries for an indefinite period and the possible withdrawal of a number of automakers from our country? According to Andrey Terlyukevich, General Director of AvtoSpetsCentre Group of Companies, the current dealer network of the Russian Federation is formed for the new car market of 2-2.5 million units. If car deliveries do not normalize by autumn, then the market of new cars will most likely not exceed 600,000 units by the end of 2022.

With dealer networks, there will be a large-scale transformation of business - as well as the whole economy of the country. According to Denis Migal, CEO of the Fresh Auto dealership network, it is likely that the number of dealerships in the Russian Federation will decrease in proportion to the decrease in sales. First of all, it will be difficult for mono-brand car dealerships-partners of premium brands. Such models as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, Porsche will not be delivered to Russia in the same volumes soon. The next under threat will be dealers who have made a bet on the mass segment, but also limited themselves to one automaker - Volkswagen, Renault and others. It will not be easy for groups of companies with a large portfolio of partners - if foreign suppliers do not resume relations with Russian auto retail in the near future, the assortment and sales in them will be significantly reduced, and it will be difficult to maintain an extensive network of car dealerships and staff.

"Now it makes no sense to talk seriously about the prospects for profitability of the dealer business. Obviously, someone will be able to sit out, and someone will drown. The number of dealer enterprises, it seems, will decrease significantly in a year and a half. There is faith in China and hope in Korea. There is an understanding that demand will shift strongly towards used cars, and that the most reliable bread for a dealer is a quality service. The main vectors of survival for dealerships are located in these areas," summarizes Roman Slutsky, General Director of the Alarm-Motors Group of Companies.
