"Opening Auto": in March, Russians spent a third less on the purchase of new cars than in February

"Opening Auto" and the analytical agency AUTOSTAT conducted a joint study of the new passenger car market in Russia and determined its financial capacity* in March 2022. According to the results, the Russians spent 153.19 billion rubles on cars, which is 36% lower than a month earlier (239.31 billion rubles in February). At the same time, in the first spring month, 54.6 thousand cars were sold - 51% lower than in February (111 thousand units). Russians again spent the most money on the purchase of crossovers and SUVs: in March, the SUV segment occupied 66% of the financial capacity of the market. The share of premium cars also increased significantly (up to 36%). The fall in car costs in March in compare with February occurred in all brands and segments, except for F-class cars, coupes and convertibles. In March, the share of premium segment cars in the financial capacity of the market increased significantly - immediately to 36% (against 26% in February) against the backdrop of a decrease in the share of the mass segment from 74% to 64%. In the first month of spring, residents of the Russian Federation spent 54.8 billion rubles on the purchase of new premium cars, which is 13% lower than in February.

And they spent 98.4 billion rubles (-44%) on brands of the mass segment. The share of European brands grew from 38% to 45% for the month, which allowed them not only to keep their leading positions, but also to increase their lead over other brands. In March, new passenger cars of European brands were sold with a circulation of 16.7 thousand units, which corresponds to the amount of money spent in 68.8 billion rubles. Although this is 23% lower than in February, other brands lost even more money against the background of a general shortage of cars in the car market. So, for the "Japanese”, located on the second place, the volume of spent funds fell by 41%, to 34.5 billion rubles. At the same time, their share in the financial capacity of the market decreased from 24% in February to 22% in March. "Koreans" in third place, sank by 47%, to 24.8 billion rubles. As a result, their share fell from 19% to 16%. If Russian brands traditionally surpass Chinese brands in sales, now they have managed to get ahead of them also in terms of spending. So, in March 2022, cars of domestic brands sold 12.6 thousand units, and 12.8 billion rubles were spent on them. In turn, cars of Chinese brands were purchased in the amount of 4.7 thousand units, and the cost of them was 11.1 billion rubles.

The share of Russian brands in the financial capacity in comparison with February fell from 9% to 8%, while for the "Chinese" - from the same 9% to 7%. It is also worth noting that the cost of purchase of Chinese cars for the month decreased the most - by 50% at once. The drop in sales of the "Chinese” amid logistical problems and the rise in price of newly purchased cars from the Middle Kingdom at the peak of the yuan played a role here. As for American brands, 1.1 billion rubles were spent on them in March. This is 34% lower than a month earlier. At the same time, the share of "Americans" remains the smallest in compare with others - at the level of 1%.

* Financial capacity is the amount of money that Russians spent in total on the purchase of new passenger cars during the reporting period. It is calculated on the basis of weighted average prices of new cars and their sales for the reporting month.
