Experts told whether cars will become cheaper against the background of the strengthening of the ruble

The March collapse of the ruble caused a jump in prices for new cars by an average of 35-45%. Despite the fact that recently the exchange rate of the national currency began to strengthen gradually, some automakers operating in the Russian market continue to raise prices for their products. Experts interviewed by the agency "AUTOSTAT" told whether it is possible to reduce the cost of cars against the backdrop of further stabilization of the ruble, given the aggravated deficit in the car market, on the one hand, and the fall in demand, on the other. "The increase in prices is due to several significant factors: first of all, the unstable state of exchange rates affects, followed by a catastrophic deficit in the industry, which will only intensify if manufacturers do not resume supplies to Russia in the near future (which is unlikely to happen) and resolve logistical issues. For this reason, an extremely limited stock of cars remains in the warehouses of dealers, consumers continue to be interested in the purchase of a new car, so the stock level is decreasing every day," said Alexey Starikov, Deputy General Director for Sales of New Cars at AVILON AG. According to Andrey Olkhovsky, General Director of the Avtodom Group of Companies, there is now a downward trend in prices, but this process occurs pointwise, according to individual models.

The reasons for this are that pricing in the market is now regulated by dealers and not by importers, since the latter can no longer dictate their own terms. Yulia Ovchinnikova, development director of the KLYuCHAVTO auto holding, notes that an endless rise in prices is impossible in a market where the laws of supply and demand operate. High car prices lead to a decrease in the level of demand. Therefore, one way or another, all market players will have to find a balance. Car dealers need to find tools that will stimulate demand for car purchases in the current environment. In turn, Andrei Terlyukevich, General Director of AvtoSpetsCentre Group of Companies, believes that there will be no increase in prices in April.

However, the question arises about the purchasing power of the population and the ability of dealers to support business in the current environment. Deliveries have been suspended for all brands, except for cars from China. At the same time, the stocks of dealers will be enough for about three months. However, the supply of cars is finite and the shortage will only get worse going forward, and is likely to continue throughout 2023, even if supplies resume.
