Nissan has finally abandoned the low-cost brand Datsun

The Japanese automaker Nissan has decided to close finally its historic Datsun brand, under which budget cars have been produced for almost ten years. Their production was stopped completely at the Indian Renault-Nissan plant in Chennai (formerly Madras). Recall that the original Datsun cars were produced from 1931 to 1986, and in 2013 the brand was revived for the markets of developing countries, including the CIS, India and Indonesia.

At the same time, already in 2019, it became known about the plans of Nissan management to abandon the budget brand due to the fact that the project turned out to be unprofitable. In the same year, Datsun left the Indonesian market, and a year later, the production of brand cars was discontinued completely in Russia. Until recently, redi-Go compact hatchbacks continued to be produced in India, which have now also been removed from the assembly line due to extremely low popularity. For example, last year only about 4.2 thousand cars of the brand were sold in the country. Recall that Datsun brand appeared in the Russian market in September 2014 and it was represented by two models - the on-DO sedan and the mi-DO hatchback, created on the basis of LADA Granta and Kalina, respectively.

The cars were equipped with a 1.6-liter petrol engine producing 87 or 106 hp, which is combined with both a manual transmission and an automatic transmission. The absolute bestseller of Datsun was the on-DO sedan, the share of which reached 80% of the brand's total sales. In total, about 100 thousand cars were sold in Russia during the existence of the Datsun project. According to experts, with the departure of Datsun, in the first place, AvtoVAZ won, since LADA was its direct competitor, and there were no fundamentally serious design differences in cars of these brands.
