The Russian car market may fall by 50% in 2022

Sales of new passenger cars may fall by 50% in compare with 2021 in Russia this year. This was announced by Sergey Tselikov, the director of the analytical agency "AUTOSTAT", during his speech at the ROAD 2022 Convention. The expert noted that such a fall in the Russian car market could happen if the baseline scenario is implemented, according to which the sales volume of new passenger cars in 2022 will be 750,000 units.

However, if the market develops according to an optimistic scenario, then its volume may reach 980,000 units, which will correspond to a 35% drop. If the pessimistic scenario is realized, then the market volume will be equal to 470,000 cars, which is 70% lower than in 2021. Naturally, it will depend mainly on the further development of the military special operation in Ukraine and its consequences.

A similar forecast is shared by the Association of European Businesses. As Aleksey Kalitsev, Chairman of the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee, stated at the ROAD 2022 Convention, sales of passenger cars in Russia by the end of 2022 could decrease by 50% and reach approximately 800,000 units in a positive scenario.
