General Motors leaves finally Russia

The American automaker General Motors is leaving finally the Russian market due to US and international sanctions. Dealers have already received notice to stop deliveries of vehicles and parts that are effectively prohibited by US sanctions. According to sources of the edition, GM also dismisses employees of the Russian office. Thus, the company will become the first foreign auto concern that will finally leave Russia after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine. Recall that on March 11th, “luxury cars” from the United States were banned from exporting to Russia.

After GM curtailed local production in our country in 2015 amid the annexation of Crimea, the concern focused on the premium segment of the Russian market with the help of the Cadillac brand and American Chevrolet models. According to the results of the first quarter of 2022, 266 Chevrolet crossovers and SUVs (+209%) and 162 Cadillac cars (-73%) were sold in Russia. In the Russian market, brands were losing competition to more traditional European leaders in the premium car segment.

As the executive director of the agency "AUTOSTAT" Sergey Udalov notes, Russia has become a very small market for GM after the automaker most actively shifted the devaluation into the prices of cars in 2015, and after the fall in sales it stopped Russian production. At the same time, mass-produced Chevrolet models were produced under a GM license in Uzbekistan, but since March 9th, their deliveries in Russia have also been suspended.
