Lifan completes car sales in Russia

Sales of Lifan vehicles in Russia have been completed, as evidenced by the company's results for the first three months of 2022 and the lack of offers for the sale of new cars. Lifan has long and systematically lost the position that the company once occupied in the Russian market. The brand came to our country in the 2000s and gradually became the leader in the Chinese segment. The record was set in 2013, when the sales volume exceeded 23 thousand units. In 2014-2018, it was Lifan that sold the most Chinese cars in our country.

As a result, the brand's fleet in Russia, according to the data of the AUTOSTAT agency, is now over 154 thousand cars, second only to Chery (221 thousand units). Obviously, the brand's strategy was the driver for Lifan - the sale of affordable sedans and crossovers. Most of them were produced at the Derways plant in Cherkessk. At the end of 2018, Lifan ceased the production of its models at this enterprise, and in December 2019, Chinese-made X70 crossovers entered the Russian market. Since then, Lifan dealers have been engaged in the sale of car inventory, which was finally completed by the end of March 2022. It is also worth noting that Lifan planned to build its own plant in the Lipetsk region in 2014, but the project was never implemented. Recall that in August 2020, the Chinese company Lifan declared bankruptcy.

As a part of the automaker's business reorganization, the state-owned Liangjiang Equity Investment Fund replaced Lifan Holdings as the controlling shareholder with a 51% stake. In addition, Geely Maijie and its parent company, Geely Technology Group, acted as industrial investors, buying about 49% of Lifan's shares. The new owners renamed the brand to Lifan Technology and assigned it the role of a manufacturer of electric cars for taxi companies and commercial organizations but it have not been announced yet about export plans.
