  • 14.05.20 How many new cars will be sold in Russia?

In the framework of the last online conference “AUTOSTAT Analytic Day: Car Market Forecast 2020 under uncertainty”, the experts shared their views on the development of the new passenger car market in Russia. According to the director of the analytical agency AUTOSTAT, Sergey Tselikov, this year the market of new cars in Russia may fall by 30-50%, depending on the development scenarios.

The Russian car market fell out of the top five of European leaders in March

The Russian automotive market, which showed a 63% fall in March, fell out of the top five European leaders. According to the data received by the agency "AUTOSTAT" in the national associations of car manufacturers in Europe, the UK became the leader in the sale of cars the last month, where 243,479 cars were sold (-14.3%). This is the worst sales result since 1998, despite the previous year's low base, as the British Society of Automobile Manufacturers and Car Dealers (SMMT) notes that this is due to continued disruptions in the supply of new cars due to a shortage of semiconductors for their production, which are exacerbated by the beginning of problems with logistics because of the situation in Ukraine. Germany ranked the second among the largest European car markets with 241,330 cars (-17.5%).

According to the Association of the German Automotive Industry (VDA), a negative result was recorded for the first time after two months of growth. Meanwhile, orders for new cars in March grew by 6%, which allows us to expect a return to positive sales dynamics in the future. The third result was shown by France - 147,079 sold cars (-19.5%). Thus, the negative dynamics is recorded for the tenth month in a row. Italy is the next, the dealers of which sold 119,497 vehicles (-29.7%). According to the Italian Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ANFIA), the negative dynamics, among other things, is due to pent-up demand due to previously announced government measures to subsidize the purchase of environmentally friendly cars.

This time Spain finishes the top five, the car market of which in March fell by 30.2% and reached 59,920 cars. According to the Spanish Association of Car and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC), a negative result was recorded for the first time after two months of growth and was due, in particular, to the start of an increase in fuel prices because of the situation in Ukraine, which caused a decrease in demand. If, when considering the automotive market in Europe, Russia is taken into account, then our country has dropped to the sixth line of the European rating. Sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles were 55,129 units (-62.9%) the last month, according to the Association of European Businesses.
