On April 6th, Moscow hosted the 4th annual forum "FinAuto - 2022", which is dedicated to the financial instruments of the automotive market. The director of the analytical agency "AUTOSTAT" Sergei Tselikov was the first to present his report. He spoke about how the Russian car market looks in the current situation. And here are the highlights of his report.

“At the end of 2021, our market ranked the 11th in the world ranking. Thus, 1.54 million new cars were sold the last year (+3% by 2020). At the same time, China leads the ranking with a result of 25.51 million sold cars (+4.3%). the United States is the second one (14.95 million units; +2%), Japan is the third one (4.45 million units; -3.3%). In January-March of the current year, the market of new vehicles in Russia (data of the agency "AUTOSTAT" and JSC "Electronic Passport") fell by 21%. The largest drop was shown by the passenger car segment (-25%). Also, the market decline can be observed in the segments of LCV (-0.2%) and medium-duty trucks (-1%). At the same time, the market of large-capacity trucks and buses grew by 17% and 49%, respectively. The number of dealerships in Russia grew insignificantly for the year (+10 units).

At the beginning of 2022, there were 3220 dealers, and a year ago there were 3210. However, for the last 10 years, their reduction has been observed - during this time their number has fallen by 23%. - The market capacity of new cars showed a positive trend the last year. So, in 2021, the Russians spent 3.05 trillion rubles on their purchase, which is 22.1% higher than in 2020. This is a record in the history of the Russian market! First of all, this is due to the increase in car prices. The weighted average price of a new car was 1,990,000 rubles the previous year. In addition, the experts of the agency "AUTOSTAT" presented a forecast for the market of new passenger cars for 2022.

According to the optimistic scenario, its volume may reach 980 thousand cars, which will be 35% lower than in 2021. However, under less favorable scenarios for the development of the situation, the fall of the market may be deeper. Naturally, much will depend on the military special operation in Ukraine and its consequences.
