Bankauto: in February, Russians spent almost 240 billion rubles on the purchase of new cars

This is 12% higher than in February of 2021. Costs have risen for all brands, except for Russian ones. Moreover, the expenses of Russians for the purchase of Chinese cars doubled. Bankavto (a marketplace for buying and selling cars) and the analytical agency AUTOSTAT conducted a joint study of the market of new passenger cars in Russia and determined its financial capacity* at the end of February 2022. According to the results of the study, this figure was 239 billion 313.7 million rubles, which is 12% higher than in February 2021 (213 billion 503.5 million rubles).

At the same time, in the last winter month, there were sold 111 thousand vehicles, which is 7% lower than in February 2021 (119.4 thousand units). Traditionally, most of the money is spent on the purchase of crossovers and SUVs: in February, the SUV segment occupied 68% of the financial capacity of the market. In terms of brand origin, European automakers continue to lead in this regard, accounting for 38% in February. The “Chinese share” in the financial capacity of the market is also rapidly increasing, which reached 9% in February. At the same time, the increase in costs occurred for all brands, except for Russian ones. Also, the cost of cars buying of classes C, D, E, F and coupe / convertibles has decreased.

The share of the premium segment decreased, the mass segment increased In February; the share of premium segment cars in the financial capacity of the market fell to 26% (29% in February 2021) against the backdrop of an increase in the share of the mass segment from 71% to 74%. In the last winter month of 2022, the residents of our country spent 62.8 billion rubles on the purchase of new cars in the premium segment, which is 1% higher than a year ago, and 176.5 billion rubles (+ 16%) for cars of the mass segment.

* financial capacity - the amount of money that Russians spent in total for the purchase of new passenger cars during the reporting period. It was calculated on the basis of weighted average prices of new passenger cars and their sales for the reporting month.
