Russia may ease environmental requirements for vehicles

The government of the Russian Federation is developing a temporary reduction in the requirements of the technical regulations on emissions to keep the load of domestic auto plants. According to the Kommersant newspaper, according to the current technical regulations, all cars put on the market must comply with Euro-5 and higher.

But KAMAZ and Ural will be able to produce such vehicles in the cargo segment only until about the end of April. The situation is no better in the light commercial and passenger segments, industry sources say. "The fifth ecological class operates in the territory of the EAEU, and it was planned to switch quickly to the sixth one. Now this is hardly a priority, but it is not necessary to stop regulating harmful emissions at all," the source of the publication notes. The engine control systems of Russian players are mainly foreign, but, for example, in traditional LADA models with VAZ engines, the supplier is the Russian Itelma.

Nevertheless, this block also has a high dependence on foreign components. A Bosch and Liebherr block was installed on KAMAZ trucks, and exhaust systems from Danish Dinex, Faurecia, and Russian suppliers, which, however, also depended heavily on foreign components, were also installed on them. “Reducing emissions requirements will give automakers time to implement the import substitution solutions for those components that provide Euro-5,” says a source in one of the automakers. “This is a temporary alternative for the period of disruption of technological chains.” "The discussion of the possibility of allowing Russian manufacturers to produce cars corresponding to various environmental classes is connected with the need to create the most favorable conditions for loading auto industry enterprises under sanctions," says a source familiar with the discussion of the issue in the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

However, interlocutors among manufacturers of automotive components deny the possibility of quickly achieving of a high environmental class.
