How and why is the electric vehicle market growing in Russia?

USA forbidden the export of luxury cars to Russia

United States, as a part of another package of economic sanctions against Russia, banned the supply of luxury goods to the country, said President Joe Biden. The White House website states that luxury cars are included in the list. At the same time, it is not specified by what criteria it will be determined whether this or that car is considered a luxury or not. Before the start of the crisis associated with the situation in Ukraine, only a small number of models were supplied to Russia. For example, the large US-built Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Tahoe SUVs, some Jeep models, and a number of US-built BMWs and Mercedes-Benz vehicles are on the market. In addition, a number of third-party companies import Tesla electric vehicles into the country. Finally, new-generation Nissan Pathfinder crossovers were imported to Russia from the United States for a short time, but in early March, their deliveries were suspended.

In general, against the backdrop of the crisis due to the situation in Ukraine and the shortage of components, most foreign automakers announced the suspension of car production in Russia. “Global producers are forced to assess political, logistical and financial risks. Also the "Culture of Cancellation" common in the West influenced. First of all, the Russian market will be left by companies with a low level of localization of production, as well as with an insignificant share of sales in the country. Definitely, our automotive market is facing a serious crisis and significant structural changes,” believes Sergey Firsov, Executive Director of EXPOCAR. According to Denis Migal, General Director of the Fresh Auto car dealership network, the aggravated situation in Ukraine and the sanctions imposed against Russia have led the global automotive industry to stagnation, as the volatility of exchange rates and interruptions in supply chains do not allow the determining of the possible volumes of production of new cars, respectively, and the price for them, taking into account the growth in the cost of raw materials, components, restrictions in deliveries.

“This situation may reduce sales of new cars by 25% by the end of the year if Chinese and Korean manufacturers do not take the share of European and Japanese brands. A similar situation already developed in 2014 after the Crimean events. At that time, automakers were unable to abandon completely the sale of new cars in Russia, and some even increased their share of presence in our market a few years later. I think a similar scenario awaits us in 2022-2023,” says Denis Migal.
